Just got back from rekkid shopping (this store, Higher Source in
Huntington Beach CA, focuses mostly on house and jungle, but they do
have two rows each of "experimental" and "downtempo" where I usually
find 90% of my vinyl). The store's buyer must have been busy, because I
walked out with:
* Terranova, "Close the Door" 2x12 (Copasetik Recordings) 1999. Some
first-rate downtempo grooves, with probably the nicest understated
vocals (by Coco and Cath Coffey) I've heard in quite some time.

* Burnt Friedman & The Nu Dub Players, "Just Landed" 2x12 (~scape) 1999.
Heard quite a bit about this from the list, and at first listen it
matches and even exceeds the hype. So far I'm very impressed with this
new label.
* Muslimgauze, "Port Said" (audio nl) ???
Nice staticky clicky ambient. Don't know much else about this.
* Mira Calix, "One on One" 2x12 (Warp) 2000.
The album at the very top of my wish list, and I grabbed it brand new,
unplayed. WooHOOO! Will probably be on my 2000 top ten list.
* Susumu Yokota, "image 1983-1998" (Leaf/Skintone) 2000.
* Susumu Yokota, "magic thread" (Leaf/Skintone) 2000.
Nice lo-fi ambient and experimental soundscapes. Found mention of this
artist in the archives, and then found Dan Hill's eloquent reviews on
Motion:

* Process, "shape-space" (Fat Cat) 2000.
Moody, clicky, noisy, ambient plus some mutated rhythms.
* Klettermax, ??? (Statt Musik) 1999 (A side: "lotto," "total" B side:
"dur-o-lastic," "vibrex," "sockenrab"
Quirky minimal techno, with some plunks and blurts and other odd accents
that compliment the 4x4 drive. Anyone know anymore about this?
* Murat???, "Pilgrimage" (Method 005) 2x12, black label on one side,
white label with "Pilgrimage," a bar code, and "Mixed by Murat for
Method 11:11" on the other side.
Noisy, full-ranged minimalesque techno, a bit harder than my normal
Chain Reaction/Stewart Walker/Kit Clayton taste, but I think it will
work itself in quite well. Anyone know of this?
* the audio janitor, "score for composition 11" (Liquid Sky) 1999
This is by DJ Olive with help from Raz Mesinai, and consists of a three
vinyl set in a nice plastic folder (three copies of the same 12") with
dozens of short tracks of random sounds, vocal samples/stutterings,
percussive snippets, etc. From the liner: "this vinyl score was
developed for three turntables. the solo musician is limited to three
copies. this vinyl score of various sounds comprise a palette so no
musician need play all the sounds. adding sounds from other records is
not permitted. mix for 10 to 20 min. reverb/delay optional."
Apparently you are supposed to use three turntables and send the
recording back to Mr. Olive. I wish I had the chance to meet all those
illbient guys when I lived back there in Williamsburg NYC, Greenpoint
being just down the street. Alas. Anyway, I wavered on purchasing this
one at $30, but the guy at the counter cut me a big discount on my
total, so I felt better on the drive home.
And lots of stuff I had in my pile at one time and put back in the shelf
for one reason or another, including Smith and Mighty's new one, Kirk
DeGiorgio's "Sky Series" EP (which I wasn't bowled over by--it was okay
but didn't make the cut to the cash register), Air's soundtrack to
"Virgin Suicides" (some nice open moments and humble beats). Maybe I'll
keep my eye out for these on CD later.

P.S. Thanks to listmember Greg Clow from Toronto for spending time with
us out here in Cali (Christopher Robin (zimbette), Daniel Bremmer, Dave
Mosso, et al) during his recent visit. At my weekly club Dervish he
shook off whatever post-airline/airport monotony he may have experienced
and performed a mesmerizing guest DJ set (all CDs, travelling light) of
downbeaty, electro-y, IDMish, dubby, groovy stuff--this man has
impeccable taste. He is a very nice guy, as well. Taco Mesa is waiting
